Keçiova Mosque - Algiers / Algeria
Located in the Kasbah area, known as the "Old City" in the capital Algiers and today part of the world cultural heritage, the Keçiova Mosque is said to have been built as a small prayer house (mescit) in the 17th century.
When the region came under Ottoman control in 1516, the mescit was converted into a mosque. In 1792, Hasan Pasha of the Algerian Deys expanded it into a larger place of worship.
After the French occupation of Algiers in 1830, the mosque was converted into a cathedral in 1832 and was used as a church for 130 years. After Algeria gained independence in 1962, Algerians performed their first Friday prayer in the mosque.
